SMART Technologies and A VR Road Construction Site

The process of constructing asphalt layers highly influences the quality of the road surface. To respond to increasing quality demands, the paving industry is continuously advancing by introducing new materials and suggesting novel working methods. To keep the pace, construction teams need to further existing and acquire new working methods.
To facilitate the knowledge exchange between construction professionals, including paving experts, machine operators, and project managers, an effective means of interaction is needed. Specially developed visualizations of asphalt paving processes can be of use to identify pitfalls and support acquiring new working methods.
This project, sponsored by Stichting Pioneering(http://www.pioneering.nl/), suggests to adopt a specialized visualization approach to support the knowledge exchange. In a specially developed virtual environment real projects are reconstructed based on sensor-originated data (from SMART Technologies), while users can also interactively explore alternative working strategies. The progress and the outcomes of the project are continuously discussed with paving professionals from the Aspari ("Asfalt Sector Professionalisering, Research & Innovatie") network(http://www.aspari.nl/).
