Tire-Road Consortum

Safe and Silent Road traffic

The main objectives of the Silent Safe Road Traffic project are:

  • Knowledge: Development of fundamental insights into the tire-road surface interactions "grip" and "noise";
  • Valorisation: Development of innovative silent and safe tire-road combinations;
  • Social interest: Less noise, safer road traffic and consolidating / growth of employment.

Within this project, an in-depth and systematic investigation will be conducted into two aspects of the tire-road surface interaction; grip and noise. To this end, the following activities will be performed:

Equipment

  • 3D macro roughness road + water. Development, design and construction of a measuring instrument for 3D scanning of asphalt on mm scale;
  • 3D macro roughness road. Development, design and construction of a measuring instrument for 3D scanning of asphalt on mm scale;
  • 3D micro roughness. Development, design and construction of a measuring instrument for 3D scanning of asphalt on a µm scale;
  • Contact temperature. Development, design and construction of a 2D temperature sensor (using existing infrared technology) to simultaneously measure the temperature development in time and position of the road surface and tire at high speed (80 ~ 100 km / h);
  • Integration trailer of the above measuring equipment.

Grip

  • Set up research test methods indoor at lab level of Surface-Force-Apparatus (SFA) and LAT100 (rubber test wheel) and outdoor at tire-road surface level of a measuring trailer.
  • Investigate grip on SFA, LAT100 and measuring trailer on different rubbers / road surfaces wet and dry.
  • Research and validation of the friction model on the grip of dry (and possibly wet) tire-road surface contact that describes the above measurement results.
  • Calculation of a safe rubber-road surface combination.

Noise

  • Research into dynamic tire-road surface contact
  • Research and validation of the detailed modelling of tire-road surface contact in the current complete physical tire-road surface noise model.
  • Calculation of the quiet tire-road surface combination.

Prototypes

  • Design and production of quiet AND safe tire-road surface combinations.
  • Demonstration of silent AND safe tire-road surface combinations.
