Product, System and Infrastructure Safety |
Safety by Design focuses on the early integration of safety considerations in the design and development of products, systems and infrastructure. The course uses real-world cases to help students understand how safety challenges emerge across people, technology and context, and how these challenges can be translated into design choices, requirements and interventions. The course addresses the role of hazards, shocks, stresses, risks, trade-offs and uncertainty during design and operation. It supports students in exploring problem and solution domains, identifying safety-relevant requirements, and reflecting on the balance between safety, reliability, availability, maintainability, security, sustainability and other design objectives. The course builds on the book Safety by Design by Dr Mohammad Rajabali Nejad. Selected additional materials and case studies may be provided through the University of Twente learning environment.
