A European research consortium led by the University of Twente, in partnership with NLR, Netherlands Aerospace Centre and Technische Universität Dresden, has secured €0.5 million in funding through the ESA Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP) FIRST! Initiative. The project will pioneer next-generation thermal protection systems (TPS) for reusable space vehicles.
At the UT’s Faculty of Engineering Technology (ET), Dr. Davoud Jafari (Project Coordinator) and Dr. Shirin Dehgahi will spearhead research into novel high-performance materials, innovative interlayer bonding techniques, and cutting-edge additive manufacturing processes.
These advancements are designed to produce robust, lightweight, and reusable TPS solutions capable of withstanding the extreme thermal and mechanical loads experienced during atmospheric re-entry. By improving durability and reducing production costs, the research supports the development of sustainable and economically viable space transportation systems.
The consortium’s work aligns with ESA’s vision for future space access, contributing to Europe’s strategic capabilities in launch and re-entry technologies.
