Suzanne Hulscher, Professor of Water Management at the University of Twente has been elected a member of The Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR). The Cabinet approved the nomination on 15 March, and the appointment by the King will take place shortly.
The WRR states:
“Hulscher’s arrival will increase the Council’s disciplinary breadth and scope of expertise. She is one of the best in her discipline, and her work as a research scientist has demonstrated her great awareness of social impacts. Hulscher will introduce the technical and scientific disciplines to the WRR.”
Honour
Hulscher is honoured to have been nominated for the WRR. “This is a great honour. This role brings scientific research and society even closer, and that is extremely important, even though it does remain a challenge. I am looking forward to rising to this challenge with the other WRR members.”
About Suzanne Hulscher
Professor Suzanne Hulscher (1966) is Professor of Water Management at the University of Twente. Her research focuses on the the behaviour of water and its interaction with the ground. Human intervention, for example sand mining, has a great effect on this interaction. It can cause the ground to exhibit a completely different wave pattern, leading the water to also behave differently. Thanks to the work of Hulscher’s group, we now know more about topics such as flood risks and the optimal locations for offshore wind turbines and pipelines.
Hulscher was awarded the Simon Stevin Mastership from the STW Technology Foundation (now TTW) in 2016, was appointed member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and is chair of the TTW research programme RiverCare.
In 2017 she gave the Dies Lecture during the Dies Natalis of the University of Twente.
Professor Catrien Bijleveld is also being appointed as a member of the WRR. Professor Ernst Hirsch Ballin has been relieved of his position as Council Member and will contribute further in an advisory capacity as an external member of the WRR.
