New Student intake UT greater than ever

This Year UT growth 20%; UT Technology Sector rises by 6%.

New student intake at the University of Twente has grown considerably this year with an increase of 20%. This is partly due to the expansion of the range of bachelor’s programmes offered in English. This is clearly visible, for example, in the psychology programme. The science programmes in Twente have also shown strong growth with a 6% increase. This is comparable to other 4TU universities (a collaboration between 4 technical universities in the Netherlands) that show similar growth rates. As time passes the rising popularity of technical educational programmes does however place universities in a dilemma since budgets fail to keep up with the growing number of students.

With a growth rate of 103%, the Technical Computer Science programme at the UT is a front runner. In addition, the Civil Engineering (+45%) and Business & IT (+26%) programmes are up there in the top three. Geert Heijenk, programme director of Technical Computer Science: “This year, the Technical Computer Science programme is for the first time an international, English-language educational programme. This is the main reason for the intake growth. Besides making the educational programme accessible to students from abroad, it makes the programme especially appealing to students from the Netherlands. Approximately half of the growth is attributable to an increase in the number of students from the Netherlands. This increase was possibly caused when the educational programme improved the entire information process and brought more attention to the profile of the programme, including the Twente Educational Model.”

The UT performs well in all sectors where it concerns national applications. Nationally, the total number of first year students has increased by 8%, compared with 20% at the UT.
