(Local) Alloying and Cladding of Advanced Aluminium Alloys Employing Friction Stir Welding.

This research is carried out under the project number MC08.07290 in the framework of the Research Program of the Materials innovation institute M2i (, the former Netherlands Institute for Metals Research.

This project is a collaborative research project between Materials Innovation Institute (M2i), University of Twente and the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR).

PROCESS: Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining technology which has found applications in various sectors: aerospace, shipbuilding, automotive and railway industry. Since its invention in 1991 in TWI (, FSW has been used successfully for joining various similar (Al-alloys, Ti-alloys, steels) or dissimilar materials.

FSW presents several advantages compared with the conventional welding techniques:

1.there is no melting in the process and hence there are no melting-related joint imperfections.

2.the joint has a high mechanical efficiency. is applied to many ‘‘hard-to-weld” materials. is an enviromental friendly process.

AIM OF THE PROJECT: The principal aim of the project is to develop a prototype tool for FSW process which will supply a filler material to the weld area.

More precisely the project will focus on:

1.Layer deposition

a.Deposition of a thin, pure Al layer on top of a substrate (Al-clad layer);

b.Deposition of a relatively thick layer of work piece material;

c.Filling of the end hole of an FSW weld.

2.Local alloying / mixing

a.Alloying of an Al work piece material to locally change material properties (hardness, fracture toughness, corrosion protection, etc.)

APPLICATION: The Al-alloys 2xxx and 7xxx, which commonly are used in aerospace, are among the most difficult to protect of all Al-alloys. The corrosion protection of the weld region of Al-alloys (2xxx, 7xxx) represents one of the applications of the proposed innovative one-step FSW process.
