How can we use AI sustainably?
Globally, data centres already account for around 1–2% of total electricity use, and with the rapid rise of AI, this figure could triple by 2030. In Europe alone, AI-driven data processing could add significant pressure on already constrained energy grids.
How can we build data centres for AI that are both powerful and sustainable? And just as importantly, how can we use AI itself to make our buildings, infrastructure, and energy systems more efficient and climate-friendly?
Organised by the Thermal Engineering research group in collaboration with Green Hub Twente, this panel brings together experts from digital infrastructure, energy, and the built environment to explore the double challenge and opportunity of AI and sustainability. We'll look at innovations in data centre cooling, renewable integration, edge computing, and circular design, alongside real-world examples of AI reducing emissions in buildings.
Some questions we’ll explore:
- Can AI go green, or is it inherently energy-hungry?
- What are the best strategies to make data centres more sustainable?
- How is AI being used today to reduce energy use and emissions in buildings and cities?
- What policies and partnerships are needed to scale sustainable AI infrastructure?
