Congress "Waar liggen de vezels van de toekomst?", Congrescentrum Kumpulan Bronbeek, Arnhem (The Netherlands)

Dr. Dragan Jocic participated in the Congress "Waar liggen de vezels van de toekomst?" (Where the fibres of the future lie?), organized by the Nederlands Textielinstituut (NTI) in Congrescentrum Kumpulan Bronbeek in Arnhem (The Netherlands) on 11.11.2010. There were 65 participants at the congress, mostly from Dutch textile companies and related institutions. The whole day programme included 7 lectures, all of them focused on sustainability in textiles.

4th International Textile Congress “Competitive Innovation, Research and Technology based-solutions” (AITEX 2010), Alcoy, Spain

Dr. P. Krizman-Lavric and Dr. B. Tomsic participated at the 4th International Textile Congress “Competitive Innovation, Research and Technology based-solutions” organized by the AITEX - Instituto Tecnologico Textil, which took place at "Círculo Industrial de Alcoy" in Alcoy (Spain). The aim of the Congress was presenting of the latest innovations in the textile sector in different areas and disciplines of R&D in applied technologies. The speeches were given by researchers proceeding from prestigious international research centres such as: MIT (Massachussetts Institute of Technology) (USA), German Institute for Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (Germany), University College Ghent (Belgium), University of Minho (Portugal), CENTEXBEL (Belgium), IFTH (France), University of Twente (Netherlands), University of Manchester (UK), etc.

The Advanbiotex project was represented with an oral presentation titled: "Creating textiles with "intelligent" liquid management properties by surface modification with stimuli-responsive microgel". The presented work was a result of collaboration with the Department of Textiles, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. By participating a great contribution was made towards the publicity of both EFSM group and University of Twente.

P. Glampedaki realizes 1-month stay in another laboratory at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany.

The stay was hosted by the Department of Polymer Interfaces of the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany (IPFDD). The work of P. Glampedaki was supervised by Dr. Alfredo Calvimontes. The aim of the stay was surface characterization of polyester textiles functionalized by polyelectrolyte microgels, in terms of wettability, surface topography and charge. Polyester samples were characterized by performing dynamic contact angle measurements, roughness analysis and electrokinetic measurements. Mechanical testing was also performed to assess the polyester tensile strength.

EFSM Working Party meeting in TNO Science and Industry - Eindhoven (presentations Pavla Krizman-Lavric and Brigita Tomsic)

The Advanbiotex team participated in the EFSM Working Party meeting that took place in TNO Science and Industry in Eindhoven on 23 September 2010. The team members contributed to the meeting with 45-min presentations on their work with the following titles: “Creating textiles with "intelligent" liquid management properties by surface modification with stimuli-responsive microgel” (Dr. P. Krizman Lavric); “Multifunctional antimicrobial and repellent sol-gel coating of cellulose fibres" (Dr. B. Tomsic).

Lecture of P. Glampedaki at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany.

P. Glampedaki was invited to contribute with a short lecture to the periodic colloquium of the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Polymer Physics of the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany (IPFDD). The colloquium was chaired by Prof. Dr. M. Stamm. The lecture was initiated by a 30-minute presentation titled “Biopolymer-based polyelectrolyte hydrogels for surface functionalization of synthetic textiles” and concluded with a 30-minute discussion on the presented work.

24th International Conference on Surface Modification Technologies (SMT24), Dresden, Germany

P. Glampedaki participated in the 24th International Conference on Surface Modification Technologies (SMT 24) that was held from 7-9 September 2010 in Dresden, Germany. P. Glampedaki had an oral presentation with the title “Surface modification of polyester fabrics by grafting pH/thermo-responsive microgels with UV irradiation” which was included in the second session of the conference titled “Processing I”.

P. Glampedaki realizes 1-month stay in another laboratory at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Germany.

The stay was hosted by the group of Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Rheology of Interfacial Layers of the Department of Interfaces of the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Germany. The work of P. Glampedaki was supervised by Dr. Reinhard Miller (group leader), assisted by Dr. Jürgen Krägel and Dr. Rainer Wüstneck. The aim of the stay was physicochemical characterization of polyelectrolyte microgels by means of dynamic surface tension, rheological, dynamic light scattering and z-potential measurements. Microgel samples were tested using, among other techniques, pendant drop and emerging bubble tensiometry, bulk and interfacial shear rheology, and ellipsometry.

10th World Textile Conference (AUTEX 2010), Vilnius, Lithuania

D. Jocic, P. Krizman-Lavric and P. Glampedaki participated in the 10th World Textile Conference (AUTEX 2010) organized this year by the Kaunas University of Technology in Vilnius, Lithuania. The Advanbiotex project was represented with two oral presentations titled: 1. Microgel functionalized textiles responsive to ambient conditions, by Dr. P. Krizman-Lavric; 2. Polyester functionalization using thermo-responsive microparticles, by P. Glampedaki.

International Conference on Intelligent Textiles (ICIT2010), Seoul, Korea

Dr. Jocic participated at the ICIT2010 with the oral presentation titled "Stimuli-responsive cotton by functional finishing with chitosan/poly-NiPAAm microgel". The presentation has been scheduled at the opening session of the conference and had initiated fruitful discussions with other participants. The conference has been organized by Intelligent Textile System Research Center and Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the Seoul National University.

41st International Symposium on Novelties in Textiles (ISNT2010), Ljubljana, Slovenia

Dr. Pavla Krizman Lavric participated in the 41st International Symposium on Novelties in Textiles (ISNT2010) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, organized by the Department of Textiles, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, University of Ljubljana. Dr. Krizman Lavric had an oral presentation on "Vapour transmission properties of a surface modified textile material with poly-NiPAAm/chitosan microgel" (Section A2. Textile finishing / Chemical modification of textiles). Three symposiums were held simultaneously, 41st ISNT, 5th ISNG and 45th IFKT, with a total of 9 plenary lectures, 79 oral and 112 poster presentations, with participants from 30 different countries.

P. Glampedaki realizes 1-month stay in another laboratory at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany.

The visit was organized by the Assoc. Prof. Dr. Victoria Dutschk and the stay was supervised by Dr. Simona Schwarz and Mrs. Gudrun Petzold at the Department of Polyelectrolytes and Dispersions of the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany (IPFDD). P. Glampedaki, trained by the doctoral candidate Sabine Genest, performed experiments on microgels of polyelectrolyte complexes investigating the effect of pH, temperature, complexation ratio, and crosslinker on the microgel stability. The techniques used involved polyelectrolyte and potentiometric titrations as well as NIR transmission profiling of the samples.

Dr. Dragan Jocic visits the University of Belgrade (Serbia) and holds a lecture on Advanbiotex project for the members of the Serbian Chemical Society.

The lecture titled "Functionalization of textile materials by stimuli-responsive hydrogels" was held at the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy. Numerous representatives of several faculty departments have been present (Textile Engineering; Polymer Chemistry; Organic Chemistry; etc.) and shown great interest for the current project results.

Participation at the International conference "Functional materials and nanotechnologies" (FMNT 2010) in Riga, Latvia

Dr. Amit Kulkarni participated in the FMNT 2010 conference with the oral presentation (OR-53) titled "Adding functionality to cotton by using stimuli-sensitive microparticles". The conference has been organized by the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia.

Dr. Amit Kulkarni has presented his work in front of the EFSM group members, summarizing his 12 month stay as a postdoctoral researcher in the position TM3 of the Advanbiotex project.

Master thesis defence at the University of Belgrade – Anica Lancuski

Dr. Dragan Jocic participated in master thesis defence committee of the candidate Anica Lancuski, who was attached to Advanbiotex project team as an exchange student. During her 3 months stay in the EFSM group, Anica did experimental part of her master thesis, supervised by Dr. Amit Kulkarni. The event took place on 05.02.2010 at the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy (University of Belgrade) in Belgrade, Serbia, under the lead of Prof. Jasna Djonlagic. The title of the master thesis is “Incorporation of photochromic dyes in chitosan/poly-NiPAAm based microgels”. The thesis was defended with great success and awarded with the maximum grade (10).

Based on an interview with Dr. Pavla Krizman Lavric, who recently joined the Advanbiotex team as a postdoctoral researcher, an article has been published in the UT News (weekly magazine of the University of Twente). EFSM working party meeting in Ten Cate Advanced Textiles - Nijverdal (presentation Pelagia Glampedaki)

Pelagia Glampedaki presented her work during the periodic meeting of the EFSM Working Party held on the 21st of January at Ten Cate Advanced Textiles (Nijverdal). Her presentation was titled “Functionalization of polyamide and polyester fabrics using chitosan-based hydrogels”.
