MAINTAINING DIGITIZED TRAINS FOR RAILWAY RESILIENCE (AMICO). The AMICO project is a collaborative research effort between the University of Twente and the Netherlands Railways. AMICO focuses on two main areas: investigating the convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) in rolling stock and applying augmented reality (AR) technology for maintenance operations.
The increasing complexity of socio-technical systems poses challenges, including train systems that involve numerous interacting elements, processes, systems, and stakeholders. With the growing number of interactions, data is exchanged through various interfaces. The project aims to address this complexity by providing a tool to identify and maintain critical IT/OT interfaces throughout the life cycle of the assets. Additionally, an AR system will be developed and tested to assist operators in maintaining these critical interfaces.
The results of the project have broader applicability beyond trains and railway systems. The IT/OT convergence challenges are common in other complex systems such as electric networks, aircraft, wind turbine generators, healthcare facilities, and internet networks. The research outcomes are expected to be generalizable to other domains managing complex IT/OT converged systems, beyond rolling stock.
Furthermore, the research aims to be scalable, meaning it can be applied in different contexts with varying dimensions, demands, or systems. The results will not only benefit systems with a high number of sub-systems but also those with a diverse range of sub-systems.
