Visit at the University of Münster, dept. IFGI

University of Münster, visited by us at the Institute for Geo Informatics, 4-7-2016.

Delegates from the Construction Management and Engineering group André Dorée, Léon olde Scholtenhuis, Farid Vahdatikhaki, Marc van Buiten, and Paulina Racz visited University of Münster’s Institute for Geoinformatics (IFGI).

The aim of the visit was to explore ways to collaborate within the research domain of subsurface (infrastructure) mapping. Besides, the groups met to discuss the work of MSc. and PDeng students Lars Syfuss (University of Munster) and Paulina Racz (UTwente).

Paulina and Lars jointly develop a system that supports experts in deciding where they dig test trenches to localize subsurface utilities.

It was an exciting day with a full program: Dr. Carl Schulz co-organized the workshop with C&E-member Léon. Carl organized a plenary session during which  Prof. Doree presented the UTwente group's research agenda for subsurface utilities mapping & excavation safety.

Later that day, Carl guided the Twente delegation through the faculty building to show the various labs that the university hosts. We were excited to see the situated computing and visualization lab (Prof. Kray), Spatial temporal modelling lab (Prof. Pebesma) and Spatial Intelligence Lab (Prof. Schwering).

The day led to various thought-provoking ideas for collaboration (thesis projects, workshops, amongst others) for subsurface utility mapping.

UTwente will invite the IFGI group to come over to Enschede in September. We are looking forward to the meeting and thank Dr. Schulz and the IFGI for hosting the meeting.
