Real-time Dike Measurements in Flood Event Management
Recently, there have been many developments on dike sensors for real-time monitoring of dike strength. But to really use those measurements you have to link the information to the actions you can take, such as evacuation, local dike reinforcement, etc.). So the translation of sensor measurement to the likelihood of dike breaching and the related lead time (warning time) is required. There are several ideas about what such a framework could look like, but concrete examples on pilot sites are lacking.
This topic is closely related to large projects such as Flood Control 2015 (http://www.floodcontrol2015.com/) or IJkdijk (http://www.ijkdijk.nl/) from which many data are available.
We are looking for a motivated student to work on this challenging topic. This project will be supervised from Deltares and the University of Twente, Civil Engineering and Management program. Guidance is available from experienced researchers. We offer a desk in our Delft office, an internship salary and assistance where possible and necessary in finding living quarters. The student should have affinity with water and soil engineering and good grades in soil mechanics, fluid mechanics or other subjects related to the project. For more information contact Dr. Sam Karim (tel. 053 4894518) or Deltares as given above.
