PhD research: Engaged knowledge development in coastal defence in the Wadden Sea. An actor based perspective

Our society has transformed into a network society, which results in a fragmented setting in which knowledge is diffuse and spread throughout the network. In such a fragmented setting policymakers, researchers and stakeholders are involved in knowledge development. My PhD research focuses on understanding the important mechanisms in knowledge development and use, and the engagement of different actors, in the policy domain of coastal defence in the Wadden Sea. Important concepts to study these mechanisms are network society, policy arrangements, engaged knowledge, and boundary objects. A multiple case study method is chosen as main research strategy, in which a case is defined as a project in which coastal defence is a key element. This research will result in a better understanding of the mechanisms in engaged knowledge development which can be used for designing arrangements that enable more engagement.
