Research Project Description

Innovative technologies to prevent high pressure pipelines from excavation damage.

The Netherlands have an enormous underground infrastructure of cables and pipelines. These utilities are mostly located under the ground and are therefore subject to damage. The advert of the damage to these infrastructure, especially high pressure pipelines, range from service disruptions to loss of life, serious injury, and/or significant environmental impact. Third party damage has been recognized as most dominant cause of the damage to the underground high pressure pipelines, and based on the European Gas Incident Group (EGIG) and CONCAWE, damages are mostly caused by excavation and construction around pipelines. It is for this reason that the VELIN & the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment have set a target to reduce the number of accidents and serious incidents.

The ultimate objective of the project is to reduce the number of high pressure pipelines incidents to zero. To this end, first step is to identify and describe existing systems to detect the underground pipeline and alert the excavator or jobsite personnel which conduct ground work in proximity to the pipeline.
