Research interests

At the Department of Civil Engineering and Management I am currently building a new research line focusing on resilient and smart cities. What is needed to become more resilient to climate and other global change, especially in cities? To address this and related questions I will build upon my previous research, which focused on multi-actor cooperation, governance, knowledge and learning processes. I developed a particular interest for international cooperation projects and knowledge transfer as well as experimental and/or participatory governance approaches. I have worked on climate change adaptation, flood risk management, drough adaptation, integrated area development, drinking water and wastewater treatment. My aim is to develop knowledge that advances our scientific understanding how to deal with climate and other global challenges and at the same time develop knowledge that is relevant to policy and practice.

My research interests include:

  • Analysis of multi-actor policy and planning processes, including public participation,  knowledge co-production, policy and knowledge transfer, uncertainty management and institutional embedding;
  • Assessment of governance and learning processes and outcomes;
  • Methods for policy evaluation, qualitative comparative analysis, in-depth case study research, action research and trandisciplinary research.

Short CV

Before starting at the University of Twente I was postdoc researcher at the Institute of Environmental Systems Research, University of Osnabrück. My research project KNOW2ADAPT (Jan. 2014 - April 2017) focused on multi-level learning in European cooperation projects. This project was funded through an FP7 Marie Curie Intra European Fellowship.

Since 2014, I am the honorary Secretary of The Integrated Assessment Society (TIAS). I contribute to the organization of international meetings and webinars, the development of project proposals and the creation of working groups and regional chapters.

I am co-founder and co-organizer of an online community of people interested in exchanging about learning for sustainable development. This Learning Community was established in 2016 and currently has about 80 persons with an interest in learning in relation to sustainability transitions and natural resources management.

In 2015 I co-organized an international Autumn School "Concepts, frameworks and methods for the comparative analysis of water governance" (Julich, Germany, 28 Oct. – 6 Nov. 2015). For the organization of the event, we received a grant from the Volkswagen Foundation.

Before starting at the University of Osnabrück, I worked as project manager for international projects at the Dutch Regional Water Authority Vechtstromen (2013). I was involved in the beginning of a European project focusing on governance and drought adaptation (DROP) and a Dutch-funded capacity building project in Vietnam

My PhD research at the University of Twente (Sept. 2008 - May 2013) focused on the effectiveness of Dutch-funded water projects in Romania. Building on insights about policy and knowledge transfer, water governance, knowledge management, social learning and policy evaluation, I investigated the processes and outcomes of three Dutch-Romanian water projects and the Romanian governance context.

I have supervised various MSc and BSc projects focusing on international collaboration and knowledge transfer and was lecturerer and guest lecturer in various courses.
