TRAIL seminar on Sufficient Accessibility: from measurement to threshold setting 2 July | UTwente

Accessibility plays an important role in transport policy making and is used as a guiding planning principle to evaluate the performance of transport systems. Transport policies increasingly pursue multiple societal objectives simultaneously, including sustainability, health, social inclusion, and accessibility. For health, safety, and the quality of the living environment, non-arbitrary and sometimes legally binding minimum requirements often already exist. Minimum accessibility thresholds are rarely used. There are many challenges related to the identification and operationalisation of such thresholds, raising also normative questions. What are reasonable or just thresholds, and for whom? This seminar will provide new insights on how minimum and sufficient accessility thresholds could be identified and operationalised, from the perspectives of citizens and transport planners.

The seminar is followed by the PhD defence of Thiago Louro (University of Twente/ University of Sao Paulo), who will defend his PhD thesis ‘Electric bicycles: impacts on job accessibility and spatial equity in Brazilian megacities” at 16.30h in the Prof. dr. G. Berkhoff-Zaal, Waaier Building at the University of Twente.
