Publication: A five-component conceptual model of calculated and perceived accessibility: Literature review and research directions

Karst Geurs: I am happy with all my publications, but this one is very special. This paper provides an update of the first paper of my PhD, co-authored by my promotor Bert Van Wee, and published in the Journal of Transport Geography in 2004. This accessibility literature review paper is still used by many accessibility researchers and is extremely well cited (> 2,400 citations). But it was time for an update! I am proud to have authored this new paper again with Bert van Wee, two decades after publishing our original paper and after three decades of collaboration and friendship.

This new paper presents a new accessibility literature review, revisiting our 2004 accessibility definition and conceptual model. We present:
- a literature review of operationalisations of both calculated and perceived accessibility
- new definitions of calculated and perceived accessibility
- a five-component conceptual model; extending our 2004 component accessibility model in two ways: addition of the digital component of accessibility, and addition of social interactions to the individual component accessibility.
