Since December 1st 2025, Prof. Dr. Suzanne Hulscher is the chair of the department of Civil Engineering and Management (CEM) for the Faculty of Engineering Technology.
Suzanne: “As department chair the main challenge is to get trust within our department. In these unsure, unsafe and financially turbulent times, this is very important. Next to this, I would like to continue the financial sustainability of the CEM department and give more priority to excellence.”
As a chair, Suzanne will be responsible for the research, education and long-term strategy of the department, together with the members of the daily management team (CEM Executive Committee). In addition to the position as Chair of the department, Suzanne will continue her work for the group Water Systems, cluster Marine and Fluvial Systems where she focuses physical processes regarding sustainable solutions in rivers and coastal areas to adapt against climate event challenges. Next to her appointment at the University of Twente, she remains working for the WRR (Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy) in the Hague for one day a week.
Civil engineering and management
Research in the CEM department aims at acquiring qualitative and quantitative knowledge on the lifecycle of civil engineering systems and objects, these can be natural as rivers and coasts, as well as constructed ones in a societal and environmental context. Research concentrates on construction management and engineering, transport studies, river and coastal engineering and water management.
The CEM department is a leading civil engineering department in the Netherlands with about 50 fte academic staff, 5fte non-academic staff, 650 students (BSc & MSc), 15 EngD students, 75 PhD students and 10 Postdocs.
