Research TEM

The chair in Transport Engineering and Management (prof. dr. ir. Eric van Berkum) focuses on the optimization of transport networks through a better network design, intersection design and/or control, traffic information or traffic management measures.

A first research focus is on the temporal and spatial performance of transport networks, on data collection methods (e.g. induction loops, smartphone, radar, camera’s) and data analytics. A second research focus is on the multi-objective optimization of network performance, and the trade-off between performance measures, e.g. throughput, traffic safety, equity and environmental indicators as the emission of GHG and air quality. A third research focus is on the relationship between travel behavior, e.g. the choice of mode, route, and time of travel, travel information and its ability to improve network performance.
