Our built environment is increasingly created by the on-site assembly of off-site produced building components. Assembly in industry is the bringing together of parts into a finished product. For efficient assembly, it is desirable that the design matches the dimensional deviations that occur. In practice, this is hardly the case because of the gap between the design and realization phase of objects in construction. As a result, many assembly processes do not proceed as expected. UT researcher Wim Verburg has developed a design-for-assembly method for construction and infrastructure projects. Our built environment is no longer realized by processing materials on construction sites. This often involves assembling elements produced elsewhere on site. It is important to think about the design for the assembly of the components on the construction site itself. The designers can realize the assembly using the design-for-assembly method. With the 'system of systems' design, an entire project is designed. With this method, the design is based on dimensional deviations that can be realized in practice. Based on this, the parties that carry out the various assembly processes can optimize their processes using the classic design for assembly rules.


Construction accidents are often the result of design decisions. Designers start from assumptions that do not correspond to reality. However, in the developed design-for-assembly method, the assembly design is based on documented assembly processes. To this end, a so-called 'construction system template' is available for every assembly process. Based on this, the health and safety plan can be accurately described. This makes it possible to guarantee the safety of the people involved.


The design of the assembly and the connections with other components have a major influence on the efficiency. Unfortunately, insufficient attention has been paid to this aspect so far. The gap between construction design and its realization inhibits the full potential of using assembly processes. The design-for-assembly method allows the full potential of off-site manufacturing and on-site assembly to be fully exploited. This creates a working method for working on a structural improvement in labor productivity in the sector.


Moreover, with the application of the developed design-for-assembly method, the flow of construction waste will also come to an end. After all, this does not arise with a well-prepared assembly process. An additional effect is the reduction of construction sector-related transport.
