Since restoration of motor function in walking and stance is an important aspect in the rehabilitation of stroke patients, insight in the responsible recovery mechanisms is of great importance. In restitution, the increase in motor function is attributed to a return of original movements and or function of the paretic leg, whereas in compensation the increase in motor function is ascribed to the emergence of new movement strategies or to secondary adaptations in the non paretic leg to compensate for the decreased motor abilities in the paretic leg.

Walking is a very important function of the human movement apparatus. The question how walking is controlled by the central nervous system is yet to be answered. A number of reasons lead us to believe that neural oscillators in the spinal cord, termed Central Pattern Generators (CPGs), have a major contribution to human gait control.

Orthopedic interventions such as tendon transfers have shown to be successful in the treatment of gait disorders. Still, in many cases dysfunctions remained or worsened. To assist clinicians, an interactive tool will be useful that allows evaluation of if-then scenarios with respect to treatment methods.
