Economic, environmental and social impact

Green energy transition implies the greening of resources, technologies and human routine and organisation in incumbent – fossil – dominated energy systems. Behavioural, organisational and governance aspects are critical for successful green energy transition. Changing the mind sets in the economy, developing new organisational models and designing governance of green energy transition is among the social science challenge of greening energy solutions. The ethical philosophical analysis is to contribute to a better role of technology in society, for instance by stimulating better research and design practices, better policies, and better public debates about technology.

Business models

In cooperation with societal stakeholders the University of Twente is developing new business models and modes of governance for biomass supply chains, bioenergy and bio-based products. In smart grid development the University of Twente addresses participation and involvement of the energy consumers, especially households.
Smart grids will enable peer-to peer supply of electricity in neighbourhoods, without intervention of distribution companies. This requires innovative ways to organise communities and to manage the financial flows involved. Smart grids also require smart regimes, new regulative regimes able to deal legally with the increasing diversity in the energy system. Developing new organizational models and designing innovative governance regimes for green energy transition therefore, is crucial for Green Energy solutions in society.
