In memoriam Anne Buijsrogge-Brentjes

Sadly, we have to announce that our dear former student, PhD student, and colleague Anne Buijsrogge-Brentjes passed away on May 16, 2026, at the age of 35, after a long battle with cancer.

Anne started studying at the University of Twente in 2008. After one year of Technical Medicine she decided to switch to the Applied Mathematics programme, where she revealed herself as a talented student, graduating in 2014. We were very happy that she then decided to pursue a PhD under our joint supervision in the UT's Stochastic Operations Research (SOR) and Design and Analysis of Communication Systems (DACS) groups. This culminated in a successful thesis defence in 2019, about rare-event simulation of non-Markovian queueing models.

After completing her PhD and a temporary teaching position at the UT, she moved to the University of Delft as a post-doc and teacher. We remained in contact with her, online and through visits, and for a long time she even kept collaborating with us on a scientific paper, despite the development of her illness.

We remember Anne as a very kind and often cheerful person, with concern for others and a great sense of responsibility. She did not easily give up on things, often striving for perfection, and was very enthusiastic about mathematics, but also about her favorite sports and the friendships that resulted from that. We have great respect for how she dealt with the various setbacks life threw at her, her illness in particular.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Anne's family, friends and colleagues, and wish them strength in handling this great loss. She will be greatly missed by many.
