This work presents an algorithm to plan treatments for rehabilitation outpatients. These patients require a series of treatments by therapists from vari- ous disciplines. In current practice, when treatments are planned, a lack of coordination between the different disciplines, and the deficiency to plan the entire trea ment plan at once, is often witnessed. This jeopardizes both quality of care and logistical performance.
The multidisciplinary nature makes planning and control of the rehabilitation process a challenging task. The integral treatment planning algorithm, formulated as an integer linear program (ILP), ensures continuity of the rehabilitation process, while simultaneously controlling seven performance indicators among which access times, combination appointments and therapist utilization. We apply our approach to the rehabilita- tion outpatient clinic of the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Considering the results for this case, we are convinced that our approach can be valuable for decision making support in resource capacity planning and control at many reha- bilitation outpatient clinics. The developed algorithm is currently being implemented in the AMC.
