Performance measures for reliable data estimation in wireless sensor networks

We consider the problem of reliable data estimation in a wireless sensor network. Clients arriving at the network are interested in computing a reliable estimate of an attributed, for instance, temperature, noise level,  based on a sufficiently large set of sensor observations. The size of the set of observations must be large enough so that the accuracy of the estimate is below a targeted threshold. The sensors broadcast their observations. Sensor broadcasting allows, for instance, multiple applications to access simultaneously the sensed data. We consider centralized and decentralized broadcasting schedules. Exact expressions are provided for the performance of the system, i.e. the expected time the clients wait at the sensor network to retrieve a reliable estimate, the expected number of clients in the system and the expected length of the busy period.
