We are proud to highlight Andrea Continella's (SCS) contributions to award-winning research in cybersecurity ethics. Andrea is a co-author of the paper “Operationalizing cybersecurity research ethics review: from principles and guidelines to practice,” which received the Runner-Up prize in the Dutch Cybersecurity Research Paper Award.
The paper, co-authored by Dennis Reidsma (HMI), Jeroen van der Ham-de Vos (DACS), and Andrea Continella (SCS), was published at the 2nd International Workshop on Ethics in Computer Security (2023). It addresses a critical, often overlooked challenge in cybersecurity research: the unintended consequences that may only become apparent after real harm has occurred.
In its jury report, the selection committee praised the work for clearly identifying a realistic and comprehensive range of risks, from accidental privacy breaches to the mishandling of newly discovered vulnerabilities. By translating ethical principles and guidelines into concrete, actionable practices, the paper offers a framework to help prevent damage before it occurs. Importantly, the jury emphasized that the proposed approach is broadly applicable, with potential impact extending beyond academia to industry environments where new cybersecurity tools and technologies are developed.
This recognition underscores Andrea Continella’s role in advancing responsible and ethically grounded cybersecurity research with real-world relevance.
