5 new UTQ’s awarded to staff of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

Tuesday, January 23 5 new University Teaching Qualifications (UTQ) were awarded. The participants, Bram Nauta, Jasper Goseling, Christoph Brüne, Marten van Sinderen and Andreas Peter received a certificate, flowers and a lunch, in the presence of the portfolio holder of education Jan Willem Polderman, program directors Alma Schaafstal and Geert Heijenk and the dean of the faculty, Peter Apers. We consider this to be a festive completion of the UTQ track, in which the participants were committed highly. The next ceremony is already being planned: a number of teachers are currently being assessed and a few that already passed their exam, who could not attend the January graduation, will be present at the next ceremony.  

Excellent Teachers Network @ EEMCS

At the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, we value teacher development highly. Next to UTQ one of the initiatives is the Excellent Teachers Network (ETP) project. The ETP project is a project in which academic staff is challenged to become an excellent teacher and to inspire fellow colleagues along the way.  

A network of EEMCS teachers is formed who have a passion for education and have the ambition to improve their education on the basis of new insights gained from literature, experiences elsewhere and peer-learning. Teachers in the network are explicitly given the opportunity to carry out pilots, develop best practices, learn from the new experiments / teaching methods and communicate and discuss the results with the others, thus inspiring colleagues within the faculty. The ultimate goal is to bring the quality of education at EEMCS to an even higher level.

Quality of education – a long-term UT strategy

UTQ and SKE are in line with the UT long-term strategy to stimulate the quality of education. Next to these two teacher development instruments, two other initiatives have been initiated to support this commitment:

• Awarding of excellent skills in teaching.
• Educational qualifications included in the career perspectives of academic staff.
