U-Today recently published a moving story about our colleague Rob Bemthuis, who defended his PhD last year under extraordinary and emotional circumstances.
On the morning of his defense, Rob received the heartbreaking news that Professor Paul Havinga, his promoter and the former chair of our group, had passed away. Despite the immense shock, Rob decided to continue with the defense — knowing that Paul, always positive and supportive, would have encouraged him to complete this milestone.
Rob’s other promoter, Professor Maria-Eugenia Iacob, who was gravely ill at the time, also made a remarkable effort to support him. She joined the ceremony virtually and even appeared in person to deliver the laudatio, a gesture Rob describes as unforgettable.
Paul’s impact as a brilliant scientist, inspiring mentor, and warm colleague continues to live on in our group and in the many students and researchers he guided. We are proud of Rob’s resilience and grateful for the lasting legacy Paul has left behind.
