Smartphone bridge monitoring

LIGHTWEIGHT IMAGE-BASED KEY POINT TRACKING FOR REAL-TIME BRIDGE MONITORING WITH SMARTPHONES

 Mobile Phone, Photography, Bridge

Problem Statement:

Remote sensing is convenient for bridge monitoring since sensors don’t have to be deployed on the bridges. An interesting method is using handheld cameras to capture the video of the bridges and then processing the videos to measure the movements such as displacement and vibration in real-time. For this approach, separate the movement of the cameras themselves from the movement of the bridge is essential. Therefore, it’s important to align the images based on robust natural key points in real-time.

Tasks:

The project will be divided into 3 main tasks:

  1. Applying key point detection tools for bridge monitoring with videos
  2. Key point selection for image aligning
  3. Estimate the movement of critical points on the bridge and compare the results with a method with IMU sensors on the bridge
