Organisation & Contact

The year 2022 was a hybrid year for our Faculty: from lockdown to a Faculty in full swing on campus again.

Welcome to the first version of the public-friendly annual report of the EEMCS faculty. We aim to produce such a report on a yearly basis. To achieve the best report, we need your feedback. Do you miss any content or have any comments? Please send an e-mail to mc-eemcs@utwente.nl.

In the figure below, you can see at a glance how the faculty of EEMCS performed in the year 2022. From student numbers, to the number of degrees awarded. From the number of employees to the annual turnover. And much more. Want to know more? Then be sure to read further below the figure.

Education

In the field of education, we received approval to establish the CreaTe branch in Amsterdam, with the first cohort of students starting their studies in September 2023. Additionally, the Master's program in Robotics was successfully launched. Furthermore, the reaccreditation process for Electrical Engineering concluded successfully. Both Mathematics and Interaction Technology received medals in the Keuzegids, further validating their excellence.

In 2022, the Faculty of EEMCS had a total enrollment of 3,075 students. Among them, 1,921 were Bachelor students, while 1,175 were pursuing their Master's degrees. This reflects the diverse and vibrant student body within the faculty, encompassing both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of education.

Enrolled students

In 2022, there was a slight decrease (-53) in enrolled Bachelor students (Bsc), but a small increase (+47) in enrolled Master students (Msc). Overall, the total number of students was slightly lower compared to 2021 (-6). However, we remain optimistic about maintaining the positive trend seen in previous years.

Bachelor enrolment

The current enrollment is 601 students, a 25% decrease from 2021's figure of 800 students. The drop is mainly due to fewer students in TCS, but BIT has seen an increase. There are also fewer students in AM, Create, and EE. These changes were expected based on previous plans. Despite the decline, the total number of students still surpasses our initial goal of 600 per year outlined in the multi-annual plan.

Master enrolment

As of 31 December 2022, we have welcomed a total of 314 new students into our Master's programmes. Considering the anticipated arrival of external students in February and the ongoing enrollment of UT bachelor students for the rest of the academic year, we expect to reach the target intake level outlined in the multi-annual plan (450 students per year)

Research

In terms of doctoral degrees, we witnessed an increase to 42 awards in 2022 compared to previous years. While this indicates a positive trend, we have yet to reach our target of 50 degrees. The number of new PhD candidates admitted in 2022 was 75, slightly lower than in 2021 (94), 2020 (86), and 2019 (75). Nevertheless, we remain confident in achieving our desired level of PhD degrees in the future.

PHD

In 2021 we attributed a substantial part of the lower realised numbers to the slower progress of our PhD's due to COVID-19 and it might be that this effect is also noticeable in 2023. Besides that, we see that timely scheduling a ceremonial PhD defence is becoming more difficult since the Academic Ceremonies Calendar is quite packed.

The influx of PhD's was 75 until December 2022, when we budgeted 55. Regarding the EngD influx in the EEMCS Business & IT programme, we have had a total of 11 EngDs join us since 2020. One EngD started in December 2020, nine EngDs joined in 2021, one EngD joined in 2022, and one more EngD is scheduled to start on 1 September 2023. Joint effort with ET.

Human Resources

We have improved onboarding for new staff through educational cooperation. New colleagues receive better support, both socially and professionally. HR conducts interviews at three months and around two years after joining, focusing on career and personal development. Personal growth is monitored using a nine-grid system, fostering ongoing discussions.

Staff development

In 2022, we saw an increase of 12 FTEs in scientific staff and 9.9 FTEs in support compared to 2021. We are satisfied with our new staff recruitment process, as we generally find suitable candidates.

Occasionally, some vacancies may be challenging to fill. In such cases, we explore alternative approaches or initiate a new round of recruitment.

Finance

In 2022, we achieved financial success, with a total income of nearly €75 million. A significant portion of this income, around €19 million, was generated from the 2nd and 3rd income streams. We also secured various new projects worth almost €25 million. Furthermore, we received prestigious recognition through an ERC starting grant and two VENI proposals.

Income

Our Primary/Strategic budget exceeds the expected amount by an increase of €1.790M. This is largely traceable to funding from the first stream.

Results

With a total amount of €71M in expenses in 2022, the Faculty of EEMCS achieved a positive result of €3,6M at the end of 2022. This is in line with the results of previous years. With these positive results, the Faculty has healthy operations and a firm financial reserves position.
