Philips Award

A recurring part of each Dutch Mathematical Congress is the award of the Philips Wiskundeprijs for PhD students. In a special session on Friday April 15, 2011 candidates will be given the opportunity to present their research during at most 20 minutes (questions included). A professional jury of mathematicians will select the best presentation.

The prize consists of a monetary award of 1000 euro and a challenge-cup, which will be offered to the winning candidate on Friday afternoon.

The presentations should be aimed at a general mathematical audience. Hence an important criterion for the award of the prize is a presentations’ comprehensibility for non-specialists. Candidates should be PhD Students in mathematics, affiliated with a Dutch university or research institute, who did not complete their PhD before April 15, 2011.

Application is via submission of an abstract to The jury pre-selects a number of abstracts for presentation at NMC2011. These abstracts will be included in the conference booklet. The deadline for application is March 21, 2011. For further information: Julia Mikhal ( or Ruben Hoeksma (
