Today, the UT came together in the Vrijhof for its annual New Year’s meeting. As tradition has it, the media awards were also presented. The Executive Board gave a short speech with New Year’s wishes. While enjoying coffee, tea and some refreshments, hundreds of colleagues were present.
First prize
Islam Khalil
If your research is about sperm, the media are bound to jump on it. Other UT scientists have experienced that before as well. This time, Islam Khalil (Faculty of EEMCS) found himself at the centre of a genuine media storm, his research on how sperm cells can be turned into microrobots made headlines around the world. Leading media outlets such as Newsweek, The Sun, and VICE wrote about it, and there was also extensive coverage on national and international television.
Second prize
Martin Rosema
When Martin Rosema (Faculty BMS) frequently appears in the media, you know elections are coming up. At various national media outlets, he is listed in their databases as the expert on voting advice applications. Around election time, interviews appeared in, among others, De Telegraaf, De Volkskrant, and RTL.
Third prize
Femke Nijboer
Femke Nijboer (Faculty EEMCS) wrote an intriguing book, They Lived Short and Happily Ever After, in which she turns the story around: what can you do to wreck your body as quickly as possible, but in a way that still makes you happy? This “worst self-help book ever,” as she calls it herself, received attention in various media. She appeared on Radio 538 and was interviewed by, among others, Trouw and the Belgian De Morgen. She even got her own column in Tubantia.
Junior Talent Award
Maike Hübner
How social media influences our lives is more topical than ever. Maike Hübner (Faculty ET) experienced this firsthand when her scientific publication on advertising on social media was released. It generated a great deal of media attention, nationally in Germany, but also in major outlets in countries such as Portugal, Colombia, and Argentina.
Student Media Award
Solar Team Twente
The World Solar Challenge in Australia was held for the 15th time this year, and Solar Team Twente has taken part in the last nine editions. The race through the Australian outback continues to capture the imagination. National media such as De Telegraaf and Trouw covered the team’s performances, and international media also wrote extensively about the achievements of the Twente team.
UT in the Social Media Award
Giancarlo Guizzardi
Many academics appear in the media from time to time, but Giancarlo Guizzardi (Faculty EEMCS) also makes sure the work of the University of Twente is seen daily. He actively uses LinkedIn to share stories about research, education, and collaborations. His posts generate a lot of interaction and help strengthen the visibility and recognition of the university.
