NWO awards Perspectief grant to the programme Care is Coming Home

The University of Twente will take part in the newly funded NWO Perspectief programme Care is Coming Home, which focuses on developing technological innovations that support people with chronic mobility limitations—such as rheumatic diseases, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease—in living independently at home for longer.

The award became possible after NWO decided to withdraw the previously granted subsidy for the proposal INDUSTRIOPHILE, which created room to fund Care is Coming Home.

Innovative home-based technologies for sustainable healthcare

Healthcare systems face a dual challenge: rising costs and a growing shortage of care professionals. Care is Coming Home aims to address this by bringing care closer to the patient’s daily environment.

The programme develops:

  • Home-based monitoring solutions that reliably measure daily functioning
  • AI-driven analyses to detect changes in health at an early stage
  • Personalised interventions tailored to individual needs and home contexts

The overall ambition is to enhance patient autonomy, improve quality of life, and strengthen the connection between hospital-based care and remote support.

Total budget: €6.2 million (including co-funding).

Strong contribution from various faculties to UT

The University of Twente is making a large and visible contribution to the project, with researchers from three faculties: Harald Vonkeman & Ria Wolkorte (BMS), Frank Wouda (EEMCS) and Edwin van Asseldonk & Gabrielle Tuijthof (co-leader) (ET). This collaboration between faculties emphasises the strength of the Technical Medical Centre (TechMed Centre) in multidisciplinary healthcare innovation.
