Peter Veltink to step in as interim Scientific Director of DSI

The University of Twente has appointed prof.dr.ir. Peter Veltink as the new interim scientific director of the Digital Society Institute (DSI).

He will take over the role from prof.dr. Maarten van Steen, who will retire early next year. Peter will start on 1 February 2026.

With this appointment, the Executive Board has asked Peter to broaden DSI’s scope and strengthen its alignment with UT’s impact domain Safety & Security, an area where DSI is expected to play a leading role in the coming years. Peter is currently vice-dean of EEMCS, meaning the faculty will soon begin recruiting for a new vice-dean.

Peter:

"I am pleased with my appointment as interim Scientific Director of DSI, and I look forward to continuing the excellent work of the current Scientific Director, Prof. Maarten van Steen, together with colleagues from DSI and the faculties, and in close coordination with the other institutes, the Executive Board, and the support services. The challenge for DSI is, alongside other substantive priorities, to strengthen the impact domain of Safety and Security in close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. At the same time, we need to determine what the renewed research and innovation strategy means for our functioning as an institute."

Maarten looks back on his time at DSI with pride and confidence:

"It has always been a great pleasure to act as Scientific Director of DSI, not in the least because of a fantastic team. Working together with a wide variety of people from very different groups shows what makes the University of Twente unique: short links. This certainly also applies to LISA, with whom we have teamed up so often. With Peter Veltink as my interim successor, I believe the UT could not have chosen a better person to take on the challenges of the coming year with renewed energy. I wish him every success and, above all, a great deal of pleasure."
