The Team Science Award 2025 has been presented to the BIOS – Lab on a Chip group at the University of Twente. This prestigious prize, awarded annually by the NWO Domain Science (ENW), recognises research teams that demonstrate inspiring and effective interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex scientific challenges. The winning team receives €50,000 to further strengthen their collaboration and related activities.
A leading interdisciplinary team
The BIOS – Lab on a Chip group consists of 43 researchers and has a long-standing history of more than 40 years of innovation. The team, led by Prof. Dr Ir. Loes Segerink, Dr Sergii Pud, Dr Tim Segers, Dr Carsten Wloka, Dr Ir. Jorien Berendsen, and Ing. Paul ter Braak (UT), brings together expertise from biomedical engineering, applied physics, and biochemistry. Their work focuses on developing innovative lab-on-a-chip systems for applications in both health and sustainability.
Jury praises international composition and strong collaboration
In its report, the jury praises the group for its excellent team structure and deep collaborative culture. The 43 team members represent 13 nationalities, contributing to a rich diversity of perspectives and skills. The committee also commends the group’s strong commitment to education and talent development. PhD candidates and postdocs are entrusted with responsibilities for specific laboratories and instruments, supporting their professional growth. The team also encourages leadership within international consortia.
Furthermore, the jury highlights the team’s dedication to team cohesion and knowledge exchange, supported by retreats and other group activities. The clearly interdisciplinary character of the BIOS – Lab on a Chip group provides significant added scientific value to the development and application of lab-on-a-chip technologies.
NWO Domain Science Awards 2025
The announcement is part of the annual NWO Domain Science Awards, now presented for the sixth consecutive year. In addition to the Team Science Award, prizes are awarded in the categories of societal impact, diversity & inclusion, science communication, and inspiring role model. With these awards, NWO aims to honour scientists who inspire others through their dedication and exemplary contributions. The Alice & Eve project, led by UT scientists, also received an award.
