Frank Leferink named 2019 IEEE Fellow

Frank Leferink, full professor in the research group Telecommunication Engineering, has been named 2019 IEEE Fellow. This prestigious fellowship acknowledges Frank’s work within academia and within industry. Frank Leferink also holds a position at THALES Group as ‘Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Architect’ and is manager of the Network of Excellence on EMC of the Thales Group.

Leadership in Electromagnetic Compatibility Measurement Techniques

IEEE recognizes Frank for his leadership in electromagnetic compatibility measurement techniques. Frank Leferink’s contribution is acknowledged by researchers in academia and industry because of his capability to reduce a difficult EMC issue in tangible measures. This applies especially to electromagnetic compatibility measurement techniques such as flexible Reverberation Chambers and Field Strength Sensors.

A solution for electromagnetic disturbance

A reverberation chamber simulates the actual behaviour of modern environments where electromagnetic fields are scattered and reflected all around you. When we compare it with sound, then a reverberation chamber resembles a church, or an empty scattering room. The noise pressure is in such reverberant environments much higher with the same acoustic power than in free space. This effect is used in electromagnetic reverberation chambers to create high field strength (~sound pressure level) with the same power. Then we can test if equipment, for instance used in hospitals, can function inside closed surgery rooms without being disturbed. We call this EMC. An example of disturbance is the buzzing noise in your car radio when a 3G mobile phone is active.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one-percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement.
