University of Science & Technology of China visits UT

Last Thursday, 15 June, the UT received a delegation from the University of Science & Technology of China to discuss an extension of the collaboration between the two universities.

USTC was founded in Beijing in 1958 by the Chinese Academy of Science. In 1970 it had to move southwards to Hefei because of the political tensions between China and the Soviet Union. Nowadays it is one of the top technical universities in China.

Several UT researchers have a long lasting cooperation with colleagues at USTC, among them Louis Winnubst (TNW) and Jaap van der Vegt from our own Mathematics department.

EEMCS has agreements with USTC regarding double degree PhDs and a so called 3+2 bachelor’s/master’s programme. In this programme students combine the fourth bachelor’s year of USTC with the first year of a master’s programme at the UT, thus saving one year in the trajectory towards the master’s degree.

UT and USTC expressed their wish to stimulate staff exchange between the two universities to make the cooperation more sustainable. During a brainstorm quite some suggestions were made for cooperation.

In October a delegation from the UT will pay a visit to USTC and then we will define spearheads for immediate implementation. Additional suggestions are welcome! You can mail Maarten Korsten.

This summer 18 students from USTC will join the CuriousU summer camp. Also four students from USTC will carry out a summer internship in EEMCS research groups: SCS, DACS, SC and BSS.
