All winners now have a chance on winning the Central Education Award. The Central Education Award is awarded every year during the Opening of the Academic Year to the best teacher of the University of Twente. With this award, both the University of Twente and the students of the Student Education Convent, emphasize the importance of high quality education and encourage teachers to do the best teaching job they can. The chairman of the Central Education Award will award the prize. The Central Education Award consists of a prize amount of € 2.500 and a certificate.

For the first round of the Central Education Award all nominees are required to write a motivation letter. Subsequently, after several rounds there will be three finalists that will compete in the grand final which will be held on June 21st. There they will have to prove that they are worthy for receiving the prize and one of them will go home with the honorable title of Best Teacher of the University of Twente!

Comments by I.C.T.S.V. Inter-Actief

This year the nominees for the Decentralized Education Award were Mannes Poel, Pieter Tjerk de Boer and Doina Bucur. In a lunchlecture at Inter-Actief, they all gave a short lecture, after which the students could vote. Last week, the award ceremony was held and the ranking was as follows:

  1. Pieter-Tjerk de Boer
  2. Doina Bucur
  3. Mannes Poel

Of course, all nominees are congratulated with their honorable nomination!

Comments by W.S.G. Abacus

W.S.G. Abacus organises the AMEP, the Applied Mathematics Education Prize, formerly known as the TWOP, every year as our way of nominating the best teacher of the study Applied Mathematics. Members of W.S.G. Abacus could vote by specifying their top three teachers in a special section of the W.S.G. Abacus website. The top three consisted of Hans Zwart, Hil Meijer and Nelly Litvak.

During a lunchbreak the nominees were given the chance to prove themselves worthy of the prize by giving a lecture with the theme “MatheMagics”. First up was Hil Meijer, who interpreted the Wronskian as being a piece of magic. Then up was Nelly Litvak, who showed us how magically the internet is put together as a huge graph of connected computers. Hans Zwart subsequently proved to us how a very hard theorem could be easily, or should I say magically, solved.

All nominees had very interesting lectures, probably also because it’s for once not relevant for the exams, but there can of course be only one winner. Nelly’s lecture was among other things most relatable for the audience, consisting of mostly students, so she had won the AMEP.

The students have great faith in Nelly and wish her good luck in her nomination to win the Central Education Award!
