Welcome to the lab

The Interaction Lab is a place that connects different fields of research that involve interactive technology. The lab offers a space to study, interact, use, and discover new equipment.

Tech can easily be reserved and used by any student or researcher at the University of Twente. Besides being a work-focused space, the lab is also meant as a social space where new ideas and collaborations can grow.

The Interaction Lab is a space that provides ready-to-use interactive technologies and facilities to create societal impact and novel meaningful interactions. It aims to give BSc CreaTe and MSc ITECH students at the University of Twente access and knowledge about technology for their projects. This creates the opportunity for new, impactful ideas to emerge. We also envision our space as an open playground for interaction and discussion between students and researchers.

Opening hours

Lab space: Monday to Friday 9:00 - 17:30

Theatre and Technology

Fedde&deCarvalho is an artistic team that has reimagined the dining experience with an interactive creation, “Luister! We eten” ("Listen! We eat"). This performance employs technology to create social interaction centred around sound and attentive listening. Handcrafted tableware and specially designed tables equipped with discreet audio devices transform each dining setting into a unique auditory landscape, inviting guests to become both audience and performer in a culinary concert. “Luister! We eten” is not just about eating, but also prompts reflection on our connection to the food we consume and the environment from which it originates.

Us in a Technological World

Have you ever wondered how real-life actions and movements are mimicked in games, animated movies or even in robotics? The Interaction Lab has got its hands on one such technology - The Xsens Full Body MoCap Suit. This is an accurate motion capture equipment that can precisely track movements, allowing users to capture and analyze human motion in various applications, including animation, biomechanics, sports science, and virtual reality. It is also typically compatible with many animation and analysis software, which helps in the seamless transfer of information. The technology is user-friendly and its ease of use makes it perfect for research.

Old Year, New Year

In February of 2023, the University of Twente celebrated the opening of the new Interaction Lab in the Citadel building. Over the past year, our lab has become a place where students and researchers can learn about and with technology. Now, stepping into 2024, we are getting ready for an exciting expansion with the introduction of the Sport Interaction Lab! With most of the area already in use, the final installation (the interactive climbing wall) is expected to be concluded at the end of February.

The Future of Tables

This innovative dining table integrates load cells and LED lights to assess various aspects of dining behaviour, such as weight shifts around the table, capturing individual data on dining habits and social data on interactions among table members. Throughout the meal, the table emits light signals, offering members feedback on their actions, providing insights into their eating choices, and encouraging more social dining behaviour through qualitative, expressive interactions.
