Artwork from Twente at Amsterdam Light Festival

During the Amsterdam Light Festival, a team of students from the University of Twente’s DesignLab will be joining forces with Professor of Social Robotics Vanessa Evers and Almelo-based artist Randy Lingen.

In recent weeks, the team has been working on its interactive art installation, entitled ‘From Twente with Love’, which will be exhibited from 15 December onwards, against the setting of Amsterdam’s canals. The artwork is a blend of robotics and the natural world. The wave-like sculpture responds to onlookers by blowing kisses, and by using lights and colours, with its creators hoping to demonstrate how certain groups behave in response to stimuli. It’s about how robots move and interact with people.

Amsterdam Light Festival

The University of Twente’s artwork in lights was built in response to an initiative by Twentse Ambassade Amsterdam (the Twente ‘Embassy’ in Amsterdam) and Almelo Promotie. Every year, the Amsterdam Light Festival spotlights Amsterdam city centre and its canals. The festival consists of two parts: the waterborne route is open from 1 December to 22 January, while the walking route is open from 15 December to 8 January. The artwork from Twente will be officially opened on 15 December. It is actually situated on the walking route, but it can also be admired from passing boats. After the festival, the artwork will go on permanent exhibition in Almelo.

Bucky Ball

This is the second time that Twente has sent an exhibit to the Amsterdam Light Festival. Last year, Twente-based artist Bianca Leusink and UT researcher Dave Blank created the ‘Bucky Ball’, to promote Twente in general and nanotechnology in particular.
