The start of Data Science

As of January 1, 2018, Data Science has formally started with, for instance, organizing seminars, developing joint teaching activities, and exploring the possibilities of joint research.

Data Science is the result of an initiative to bring together EEMCS researchers and lectures that contribute to data sciences across the three disciplines of EEMCS in order to do research and provide teaching in the interdisciplinary domain of Data Science:

  • Covering all parts of the data processing chain.
  • Aiming at adding value to data from a wide range of sources.
  • Among others, this involves: search, web harvesting, information extraction, data integration, data preparation, signal and image processing of sensory data, natural language processing, machine learning, pattern recognition, mathematical modeling of data and data generating processes, and computational statistics.

Data Science is not a formal EEMCS group, such as for example SCS, DMB, or SOR, because of formal organizational aspects, but we aim to operate and present ourselves as a group as much as possible in order to foster initiatives for joint research and teaching activities.
