🎓 PhD Defense Announcement 🎓
🎓 We are excited to announce that Pinar Santemiz defended her PhD dissertation titled “Side-view Face Recognition” on Wednesday, 17 September 2025.
Pinar’s research tackles a big challenge in biometrics: recognizing side-view faces when frontal views aren’t available. She introduced a side-view-to-side-view recognition framework and the UT-DOOR dataset, improving detection, alignment, and recognition in real-world conditions.
Her work benchmarks deep learning and traditional methods like LBP, highlighting the need for robust, generalizable systems for surveillance, access control, and long-term re-identification.
A major step forward for practical face recognition—well done, Pinar! 👏
