Introduction:
Together with the University of Nijmegen, we recently started investigation of application of computer vision and face recognition techniques to analyse and recognise 2D and 3D images of roman emperors. There is a huge collection of photographs of roman emperors and other important subjects in the Roman empire available on line, in photo collections and in books. In addition, a growing collection of 3D scans of the faces (or complete statues) is becoming available. A small set of high quality 3D scans and photographs was collected by ourselves.

Assignment:
The sculptors in Roman time probably used very precise directions to create scupltures of Roman emperors, maybe even comparable to the techniques used nowadays by forensic researchers to reconstruct a face from the skull of a victim. Sculptures of emperors were created by different sculptors all over the enormous territory of the Roman Empire. An important question in research into Roman emperors is how similar the resulting sculptures are in the sense of facial recognition. This assignment aims to investigate if modern face recognition techniques can be used to identify Roman emperors from various sculptures. The assignment can address this question based on 2D photographs of the sculptures, but also using 3D scans that are available.
