Jan Eijkel new portfolio holder research for EEMCS

The EEMCS faculty board appointed prof. dr. Jan Eijkel as new portfolio holder research. Eijkel is the successor of Vanessa Evers, who will be leaving for Singapore for at least a year, to take up her post as new director of the recently established Institute of Science and Technology for Humanity (NISTH) at the renowned Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Cooperation across the boundaries

Jan Eijkel about his new position as portfolio holder for research at EEMCS: “What attracts me in this position is the opportunity to help shaping the research at EEMCS. In my view a university-wide perspective is thereby essential as the challenges that face our society cannot be solved within isolated disciplines or faculties. Cooperation across the boundaries of faculties and with or even across institutes will therefore be at the top of my agenda. The university-wide themes can be a guide here, but actually are not more than a local UT echo of national and EU-wide themes. I expect choices will be made guided amongst others by the expertise and strengths available at EEMCS and UT. Here also the voice of students needs to be heard, as their generation will face the problems we leave. I will be very glad if I can be of assistance in this process.”

About Jan Eijkel

Prof. dr. Jan Eijkel was born in Amsterdam in 1955. He studied pharmacy at the University of Amsterdam and then worked as a public pharmacist while studying theology at the University of Utrecht, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1985. He then went to prof. Piet Bergveld at the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Twente to do his Ph.D. research on “Stimulus-response measurement methods for the potentiometric detection of proteins”, obtaining his Ph.D. degree in 1995. He then went to the UK, spending six years at the Imperial College London to work on analytical microchips with prof. Andreas Manz at the SmithKline Beecham Institute for Analytical Sciences. In February 2003 he was appointed at the BIOS/Lab-on-a-Chip group of the University of Twente to develop the Nanofluidics theme. Since 2010 he is full professor Nanofluidics for Lab on a Chip Applications at the University of Twente. The focus of his research is the study of physicochemical phenomena in micro- and nanofluidic systems and their applications. He is involved in both the Bachelors and Masters program of the Electrical Engineering faculty. In the bachelor phase he co-developed both the introductory IEEE module and the Lab on a Chip minor module, in both of which he also teaches. His special interest is to relate physical insights across disciplines.
