Photo exposition: “Women in Mathematics throughout Europe: a Gallery of Portraits”

It is our pleasure to invite you to visit the special photo exposition: “Women in Mathematics throughout Europe: a Gallery of Portraits”, which is now in our Vrijhof Library.

This exhibition was opened officially by our rector on Dies Natalis. The work consists of 13 photographs and excerpts of interviews with 13 women mathematicians from Europe. Collectively, the work represents a deep engagement with the artist’s role as a social conscience to societies that want to open up scientific career prospects to more women. Iinitiated in July 2016 in Berlin, this exposition is hosted every few months by various European universities, to stimulate the dialogue between the general public and mathematicians on the aspects of embracing a career in mathematics, a field where the disparity between the proportion of professional men and that of women is still strikingly large.

The FFNT is proud to be the host of the exposition in the Netherlands. This would have not been possible without the continual support of the international network “European Women in Mathematics” and the Netherland’s national network “European Women in Mathematics – the Netherlands”.

The exposition will be moved on campus through a number of locations. New locations will follow in due time.
