Title: How community structure affects epidemics

 

Abstract:
Spreading processes on networks have many applications, such as disease spreading, power blackouts and viral messages on social media. How the structure of a particular network influences processes spreading upon it is a question of great interest. In this talk, we investigate the influence of community structures on spreading processes. Communities are groups of densely connected vertices. In social networks, communities may for example refer to groups of friends, but community structures are also found in brain networks, biological networks and collaboration networks, making them an important network structure. We define a network model that includes community structures and analyze a simple spreading process on the model. By comparing this to a similar network model without communities, we find the influence of community structures on the spreading process. Interestingly, some communities make it easier for a process to spread on a network, while others make it more difficult.
