Bandwidth estimation plays an important role on link dimensioning. Practical approaches are based on empirical decisions and rough traffic measurements, completely overlooking traffic fluctuations that may impact negatively in the network performance. On the other hand, effective theoretical solutions require traffic measurements at the packet level and small timescales, limiting their applicability due to current transmission rates and traffic loads. In this colloquium, our approach of using flow-level measurements for bandwidth estimation will be presented, as well as results from initial experiments.
