A Service level approach to Personal Networks Abstract A Personal Network is a network of a user’s personal digital devices. Such devices can cooperate with each other reg! ardless of their geographical location. Some of the devices can be located at home, others in a user’s office or car, and some of the devices the user can carry with him. From the user perspective, a personal network comprises not only a set of personal devices, but also services that he or she can obtain from this set of devices. So we regard the personal network as a combination of services that can be provided by personal devices. Examples of such services include remote babysitting, remote file transfer, conferencing and so on. Our study is devoted to the service level view of personal networks. We investigate how we can conceive a PN as a collection of services. We consider Jxta as a suitable platform for creating an overlay service level in a PN and discuss advantages and challenges of this approach.
