Date: Wednesday 7 April 2005 Time: 14:00 - 15:00 Room: Zi-5126 Title : Fiber To The Premises (FTTP): Now or Never? Speaker: Kees van Bochove Abstract: --------- Although the technology of all-fiber access networks is already in place since 15 years, a large scale rollout has not yet taken place. Is this situation now changing? An overview of the worldwide activities on FTTP will be given. The critical success factors will be indicated (like geographical situation, competition environment, regulatory constraints, role of the governments, business proposition etc). Also the latest technological trends will be reviewed (point-point versus Passive Optical Networks, ATM versus EPON/GPON, single-mode fiber versus multimode fiber, single wavelength versus WDM). The question of the bandwidth required by the delivered services is also still a point of vivid discussion. The information for this colloquium has been gathered during a visit in March 2005 to the west coast of the US, including a visit to Stanford University and the conference on Optical Fiber Communications in Anaheim (the largest conference in the world about optical communications).
