Canvas update #7 – Canvas received with enthusiasm

The Canvas pilot was held in quartile 3 of this academic year. We had six courses across 5 faculties that reached 472 students and 20 teachers. Read about the first experiences and watch the teacher testimonials.

By means of online survey, teacher evaluation meetings and student interviews, both teachers and students expressed their enthusiasm and gave positive reactions. Students and teachers had some recommendations to enjoy the full benefit of Canvas when introduced campus-wide.

Students like the Canvas capabilities to deal with different types of courses, such as TOM modules, flexible / online learning, master courses, etc.

Teachers like the ease-of-use and new features not available in Blackboard, such as Speedgrader for effective grading, the ease of structuring course material, personalized communication and the common look and feel across all courses.

There is still room for improvement. Some technical issues have already been fixed. From the students’ perspective the study material in Canvas could do with a clearer structure, exploiting the options Canvas has to offer, such as better use of the “Module” menu. This can be achieved by teachers optimizing the course content and activities for the Canvas features.

Teachers advising teachers

Teachers who experienced Canvas note that Canvas has much more potential than just a file storage place. They advise to reserve time to explore Canvas now to be well prepared before the start of the 2018-2019 academic year, when most of the time is needed for teaching tasks anyway. Therefore walk-in sessions will be held in the coming weeks.
